TAMPA –A bit too long of a break has been whats kept one of theYankeesmost intriguing — and hardest-throwing – prospects off the mound this spring.
Right-handerDomingo Acevedo, whos touched 103 mph, said he hasnt pitched in a game yet because hes been building arm strength following a longer-than-usual rest this winter.
The rest was aimed at recovering from the biggest workload of his career and shoulder trouble.
I feel good now, said the 6-foot-7 Dominican Republic native, who was reassigned Saturday morning from the Yankees big-league spring roster to their minor-league camp.Everything is good.
Acevedo said he didnt start his offseason throwing program until much later in the offseason than he typically would.
Acevedo threw 133 innings between low A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season. He finished 6-6 with a 3.25 ERA and is likely to start this season at Double-A.
He went on the disabled list with right shoulder soreness Aug. 21 didnt pitch the rest of the season.
Acevedo was put on the Yankees 40-man roster in the offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft and has a chance to make his major-league debut in 2018 — more than likely sometime in the second half, if at all.
His fastball and changeup are considered plus pitches but the development of his so-so slider could decide whether he remains a starting pitcher or moves to the bullpen, pitching coach Larry Rothschild has said.
